They may be distributed by non profit organizations, uploaded to BBSs, or given away as long as no charge is required for the distribution, all files are intact, and they are not part of a commercial product. These fonts and files may NOT be sold as part of Shareware/freeware distributions in the form of Magnetic media or CD-ROM disk without written permission from James DeVries. Vertical Line and Vertical Line Hinted are fonts where the characters have been replaced with 222 vertical lines of increasing thickness. As the names imply one is hinted and one is not, i.e., the fonts are generated with and without the hinting scheme that helps fonts to print better on lower resolution printers.
Also included is a text file that contains all 222 characters. Import this text file into your favorite word processor, copy it so you have similar files separated by an empty line, define each file to a different point size, and print the file using the two fonts. Comparing these files will indicate how printing quality is effected by hinting of the fonts. Printing these fonts on several printers will allow you to evaluate the quality of the printers.
A disk of 30 printer test fonts in Type 1, Type 3, and TrueType formats along with text describing the fonts and their use is available. The 5 font shapes in the 6 formats allow additional comparisons of printing capabilities. These may be obtained for $10 shipping and handling in either FontStudio or Fontographer format or $18 for both. There is a difference, but probably of interest only to font designers.
